Making the first set of blocks for our 2021 Mystery Quilt:
We will be using all the 4” and the 4 ½” Squares cut from each fat quarter.
We will also use all the 4 ½” background squares.
Go ahead and mark a diagonal line across the backside of each of the background squares. You will be making a set of 2 Pinwheel Blocks at a time. For each set of blocks you will need (2) 4 ½” background squares, (2) colored 4½” squares, and (4) 4” matching colored squares. Position a marked 4 ½” background square facing the right side of a 4½” colored square. Sew scant ¼” seam on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on marked line. Press to the dark side. DO NOT TRIM Half Square Triangles at this time. (steps 1 and 2 from demo handout) Position a Half-Square Triangle face down on top of a 4” colored square, draw diagonal line across triangles, stitch a scant ¼” seam on each side of drawn line, press toward the large triangle, now square up to 3 ½” square. (steps 3 and 4 from demo handout) Again, cut apart down the center diagonal line on your square. You will have two stacks of 4.  Press toward the large triangle. Square up to make 3 ½” units. (step 5 from demo handout) Stack each set of 4 units with the background triangle on the bottom. Drop the bottom unit of the stack in place. Move stack to the right. Turn stack a quarter turn to the right (clockwise) drop in place. Continue moving stack clockwise, turn units a quarter turn, drop in place. This should look like a Pinwheel. Now sew the 4-patch pinwheel together.
You will make (26) 6 ½” Pinwheels which will be a 6” finished size.
Making the second sets of blocks for our 2021 Mystery Quilt:
We will be using all the 7 1/2” Squares cut from each fat quarter. We will also using all the 7″ and the 7 1/2″ background squares. Go ahead and mark a diagonal line across the backside of each of the 7 1/2″ background squares. You will be making a set of 2 Large Pinwheel Blocks at a time. These Pinwheels will be Larger and the Pinwheel will be one of your fat quarter fabrics and the background fabric will be the background. For each set of blocks you will need (2) 7 1/2″ background squares, (2) colored 7 1/2″ squares, and (4) 7″ background squares. Position a marked 7 1/2″ background square facing the right side of a 7 1/2″ colored square. Sew scant 1/4″ seam on each side of drawn line. Cut apart on marked line. Press to the dark side. DO NOT TRIM Half Square Triangles at this time. (steps 1 and 2 from demo handout) Position a 7″ background square facing up, position the half square triangle square facing down, centered over 7″ background fabric. Draw a diagonal line across triangles, stitch scant 1/4″ seam on each side of drawn line, cut apart on the center drawn line, press toward the large triangle, now square up to 7 1/2″ squares. (steps 3 and 4 from demo handout) Stack each set of 4 units with the fat quarter fabric triangle on the bottom. Drop the bottom unit of the stack in place. Move stack to the right. Turn stack a quarter turn to the right (clockwise) drop in place. Continue moving stack Clockwise, turn units a quarter turn, drop in place. This should look like a Pinwheel.
